A thermal transfer ribbon is a polyester film with multiple layers, including an ink layer, that is used in thermal transfer printing. In thermal transfer printing, a thermal printer’s heat transfers the ink from the ribbon onto a label or other material. The result is a durable, high-quality image.

There are three types of thermal transfer ribbons, including wax, wax/resin, and resin. Each type offers different levels of print quality, durability, and resistance to elements like smudging, chemicals, or extreme temperatures.
Thermal transfer ribbons typically have a shelf life of one to two years if stored under proper conditions. The lifespan of printed labels depends on the ribbon type and environmental factors.
