Direct Thermal

“DieNamic Labels will make your company more efficient and profitable”

Direct thermal labels are labels that change color when heated, usually to black. They are made from heat-sensitive paper, also known as thermal paper, that is passed over a print head with electrically heated elements. The heated areas of the paper turn black, creating an image.

Direct thermal labels are commonly used for short-term applications, such as shipping labels, receipts, barcoding, and patient and visitor identification. They are generally less expensive than thermal transfer labels, but they have a shorter shelf life and are not as durable. Here are some of the disadvantages of direct thermal labels:

  • Durability: Direct thermal labels can fade over time, and exposure to heat, sunlight, or chemical vapors can shorten their life.
  • Scratching: Direct thermal labels scratch easily.
  • Readability: The readability of direct thermal labels can vary depending on usage conditions.
  • Product lifespan: Direct thermal label last approximately 6 months
  • Adhesive: Permanent or removable
  • Color: Usually white but can be color matched to any Pantone PMS color
  • Size: Any size or shape

Thermal transfer labels are a more durable alternative to direct thermal labels. They use heat to transfer ink from a ribbon onto the label, creating a permanent print.
